While 600 Countdown will be arriving next week for 2009 Taipei Summer Deaflympics, the golden training period for the Chinese Taipei athletes are approaching too. However, the athletes have a priority mission, the coming up 7th Asia Pacific Games in Kuwait.
Thanks to the grand success and experiences of the 2000 Taipei Asia Pacific Games for the Deaf, Taipei won the bid to host the 21st Summer Deaflympics, demonstrating that sports for the deaf have been earning more and more attentions in Asia. The 7th Asia Pacific Games for the Deaf will be held on April 18-26 in Kuwait. There are 6 sports, including athletes, swimming, football, bowling, table tennis, and badminton. Chinese Taipei will be competing in all sports except football.
Asia Pacific Games for the Deaf is held every four years. The 6th Games was hosted in Taipei. The 7th Games in Kuwait was cancelled in 2004 because of the Middle East War. This year, Kuwait government is persistent to host the Games, showing the determination of the deaf community to seek world peace through sports and Olympics spirits.
Chinese Taipei Deaflympics team this year is consisted of the most impressive athletes ever: Ching-Lung AN, decathlon gold winner and Lan-Feng CHEN, bronze medalist of women’s 500m hurdles, at 2005 Melbourne Deaflymipcs; Li-Hsiao CHANG, so called “Medal Snatcher,” winning 4 golds and 2 silvers in bowling; Shu-ning TZENG, once again breaking the world records at 2008 Deaf Swimming World Champions Taipei; Chih-Hsuan WEN and Jung-tsung YANG, gold winners of table tennis men’s double at 2005 Melbourne Deaflympics; and Chien-Chen LIN, the bronze medalist at 2007 Badminton Deaf World Champions in Germany.
With the toughest athletes ever, Chinese Taipei team will absolutely shine again at the 7th Asia Pacific Games for the Deaf in Kuwait this year and at 2009 Taipei Summer Deaflympics.
