At the 2nd DIBF World Deaf Basketball Championships in Guangzhou last week, Chinese Taipei Deaf Men’s Basketball Team defeat Japan at the preliminary and won over Australia at the tournament. They made the tenth place at the end. The team returned to Taiwan on July 1st.
After beating Japan and Australia, Chinese Taipei basketball team has gained more and more confidence to enter the world’s top 8 at the 2009 Taipei Summer Deaflympics.
Luck was not with the Chinese Taipei Basketball Team at the drawing of the lots. They were in the same group with Greece, China and Japan. Though Japan and Australia were about even with Chinese Taipei, Greece was the former champion. Moreover, the first battle for Chinese Taipei was right with Greece. It made the road to winning difficult for Chinese Taipei. In order to create a better chance, the coach reckoned that energy should be saved for the last two games. The game with Greece was taken as a practice.
The second tournament was against the host — China. At the beginning, Chinese Taipei was 20 points behind for a time because of nervousness. At the forth period, Chinese Taipei chased up close, but still lost the game at 61 to 66. The next day Chinese Taipei brought back the strength. The first victory came after defeating Japan at 79-70. The results for Chinese Taipei, Japan and China were the same, 1 win and 2 losses. However, when it came to the margins, Chinese Taipei was still far behind Japan. Just one more winning, Chinese Taipei would have made it to the top 8.
At the match for the 9th-13th places, Chinese Taipei met the tall and strong Australians. The feeling of loss was left behind, Chinese Taipei pulled themselves together to nose out Australian at 69 -67, but lost to Italy and got the tenth placing in the 2nd DIBF World Deaf Basketball Championships. The host team—China disappointedly ended at the last place. Lithuania defeated the former champion and won the 2nd DIBF World deaf Basketball title.
Promoting the 21st Summer Deaflympics in Taipei was also the mission of Chinese Taipei. A huge box of promotion offerings of 2009 Taipei Summer Deaflympics was brought to the event and distributed to participants.
