Ms. Tiffany Granfors, ICSD Executive Director and Mr. Josef Wilmerdinger, ICSD Sports Director visited TDOC for site inspection in Taipei on April 20-25, 2007.
Ms. Granfors and Mr. Wilmerdinger inspected the venues for 18 sport events of the 2009 Taipei Summer Deaflympics during their stay in Taipei and provided their suggestions to TDOC. They are pleased with the venue progress, including the new-constructed Taipei Municipal Stadium, which is expected to be completed on schedule in April 2009.
Among all venues visited, the National Taiwan University Gymnasium and the Chinese Cultural University Gymnasium particularly impressed the guests. The latter was rated the best gymnasium in South East Asia. The ten-floor structure with 4 sub-levels is enclosed in glass fibers, inviting the traditional landscape of the campus into the gymnasium. It will be the venue for Judo and wrestling events of the Taipei Summer Deaflymipcs. National Taiwan University Gymnasium was the venue of the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship, very experienced with international sports events, thus satisfying Ms. Granfors and Mrs. Willmerdinger.
Two ICSD representatives also met the government authorities overseeing TDOC, Dr. Gao-hsiang LEE, Deputy Chairman of the Sports Affairs Council, Executive Yuan and Dr. Ching-ji WU, Commissioner of the Department of Education of Taipei City Government during their stay. Dr. Lee and Dr Wu both promised to provide assistance and support to the deaf sports and Deaflympics.
In addition to Taipei, they also visited southern Taiwan, attending the Opening Ceremony of the National High School Sports Games in Tainan County and stopped by the Chinese Taipei National Deaf Bowling Team to see their training in National Sports Training Center in Kaohsiung. From north to south, they witnessed the development of deaf sports in Taiwan. |
